Leana Layfield…yes, you have to say the first and last name every time – it’s our thing 🙂 She was my first friend when I moved to PA years ago for work and stayed my friend even when I made the shelf fall in her closet (within the first few hours of meeting her). She moved to Phoenix a couple months after I moved to Seattle and we haven’t seen each other (except through FaceTime) for a few years but we have that kind of friendship where you always pick up where you left off (even if it is a month or longer in between phone conversations).
When I moved to Seattle, Leana Layfield connected me with a Phi Mu sister who was a friend (at least I thought) for a little over a year. She introduced me to another Phi Mu sister that became one of my best friends in Seattle (for a little while). Unfortunately, those friendships were short-lived and ended really badly causing me to distance myself from doing anything Phi Mu. Founder’s Day was around the corner (back in March) and I didn’t feel comfortable attending the one in Seattle, so I decided to go visit Leana Layfield and attend Founder’s Day in Phoenix (the weekend after I moved to my new place).
I was so excited to get away for a weekend – especially after the craziness of moving to a new place the weekend before that I took the day off of work! I relaxed in the morning, packed a small bag (which is unheard of for me) and then headed to the airport (see previous post). Wheels were up and the vacation began!
I arrived that night and in true Leana Layfield and Julie Jacobson style, we decided to go out and have a few cocktails! We enjoyed a few drinks, people watching, pizza, and photo ops like our days in Philly!
The next morning we woke up, went grab a quick bite to eat across the street at Vincent Market Bistro, and then headed to the ball park for MLB Spring Training! We should have planned a little better and ordered tickets ahead of time (or gotten there before the game started) since it was opening weekend and ALL of the games were SOLD OUT! No worries – we went over to Old Town Scottsdale to hang out until my little brother was due to get in town (I think I forgot to mention that he happened to call the night before to ask what I was doing and when I told him I was in Phoenix he told me that he and Scoobs would be passing through so we made plans to meet up for a few). We enjoyed some ice cream at the Sugar Bowl and then walked around the little shops.
On our way home, we stopped by Leana’s brother’s house where she gave me a tour, we enjoyed some wine, and I finally got to meet her brother and Randy…only took 3+ years to meet him but we did it! Jonah called when he got to Leana’s and we headed that way. We took Scoobs for a little walk and then hung out for a bit before heading to dinner. We were going to try a Mexican restaurant but the wait was too long for Jonah who was hungry so we tried one of Leana’s favorite places, Beckett’s Table. We enjoyed a delicious meal, wine, and great conversation!
When we got home from dinner, Jonah decided to spend the evening at Leana’s since it was late and he would just get up early and hit the road to finish his trip! Of course, I was super happy because it gave me time to spend with Scoobs!
The next morning, Jonah got up early, showered, packed up and hit the road. Leana and I got up a little later and went to yoga in the park (which I must say was super nice and I did pretty good considering my hip hasn’t healed completely). After yoga, we ran home to shower and throw on nice clothes and head on over to Phi Mu Founder’s Day at Seasons 52. I was so glad that I made the trip down and attended Founder’s Day! I enjoyed getting to dress up again, the food was delicious, the people were fantastic and it was nice to feel welcomed at a Phi Mu event – thank you Phi Mu Alumnae Chapter of Phoenix!
After the event, we went home and changed clothes, made our reservation to Escape the Room Arizona, then headed on over to try and escape! I really wasn’t sure what to expect but I had such a good time. We came so close to escaping but our literal thinking minds kept us from escaping! We had a great time though and proved we are great friends who communicate well!
After that, we decided to go home, pack up my things, and then go have a quick snack and drink before bringing me to the airport! Let’s just say, we had a really good time, pushed the limits on time and…she had to come back and pick me up because I missed my flight (first time to miss a flight on my own – and not because of a delayed flight)! I would like to note that I got there an hour ahead of time but the wonderful TSA line stopped moving because the ONE lady running the machine decided she wasn’t going to take break that night and shut down early…so a lot of missed our flights! I finally got through, ran to my gate, just to find out it was moved…to another terminal! Anyhow, Leana came to get me, and I started all over in the morning – bright and early…unfortunately, my plan to make it back in time for work that day didn’t happen…but what’s wrong with another day of vacation?!?!
As you can see, I had a fantastic time in Phoenix catching up with Leana…and as always…until next time…xoxo…Julie
